Police Report #185308
The Rokkenjima Massacre
The following was recovered from a collection of diary pages as well as educated guesses from our investigators. Enclosed is a copy of the riddle which was found on the remains of a plaque that, according to past visitors to the mansion, stood in the entrance hall
Behold the sweetfish river running through my beloved hometown.
You who seek the Golden Land, follow its path downstream in search of the key.
As you travel down it, you will see a village.
In that village, look for the shore the two will tell you of.
There sleeps the key to the Golden Land.
The one who obtains the key must then travel to the Golden Land in accordance with these rules.
On the first twilight, hang the defiled ones by the neck as you praise my name.
On the second twilight, reward the faithful for their service.
On the third twilight, punish those who would deny my power.
On the fourth twilight, gouge the head and kill.
On the fifth twilight, gouge the chest and kill.
On the sixth twilight, gouge the stomach and kill.
On the seventh twilight, gouge the knee and kill.
On the eighth twilight, gouge the leg and kill.
On the ninth twilight, the witch shall revive, and none shall be left alive.
On the tenth twilight, the journey shall end, and you shall reach the capital where the gold dwells.
The witch will praise the wise, and should bestow four treasures.
One shall be, all the gold from the Golden Land.
One shall be, the resurrection of the souls of all the dead.
One shall be, even the resurrection of the lost love.
One shall be, to put the witch to sleep for all time.
October 5th, 1986.
Another year has passed since the last family conference and the family comes together once more to discuss business. This year, however, is a little different. For the first time in five years, Battler Ushiromiya returned to the island after having disowned his father for the hasty remarriage after the death of his mother, Asumu Ushiromiya. Battler and his cousins - George, Maria, and Jessica - caught up with each other, as well as the servants Shannon and Kanon. Shannon had been a new hire when Battler visited in the past, but Kanon was new to Battler. The kids' parents - Krauss, Natsuhi, Eva, Hideyoshi, Rudolf, Kyrie, and Rosa - joined the conference to discuss Kinzo's inheritance. Kinzo Ushiromiya had reportedly not been attending the family's conference for the past two years and Eva, Hideyoshi, Rudolf, Kyrie, and Rosa had grown suspicious over the patriarch's absence. The conference raged into the night as a typhoon loomed over the island, effectively cutting it off from the outside world.
Sometime that night, after the conference ended, the siblings and their spouses went searching for their father's gold - a legend amongst the members of the staff and family - in order to settle once and for all who would succeed Kinzo as the head of the family. After hours of searching, to no avail, the group got back together; however, they noticed that there were people missing. Rosa, Rudolf, and Kyrie had not returned. Krauss, Natsuhi, Eva, Hideyoshi, and the servants Kumasawa, Genji, and Gohda along with the doctor Nanjo searched for them in the mansion to no avail. Next, they checked the guest house, where the cousins were with Shannon and Kanon, where they found the cousins all asleep except for Battler and Shannon. The siblings and servants explained the situation and the group woke Jessica, George, and Maria. The group met up with Kanon on the way back out and they checked the last two places they had left to check: the garden shed and the chapel. The group finds a circle on the chapel door, seemingly drawn in blood, and Kanon runs off to the mansion to get the key. Upon his return, Kanon let the family into the chapel where the bodies of the missing three were found hanging by their necks, quite clearly dead. On the floor in front of them is the charred corpse of Kinzo Ushiromiya. Note: The medical examiner that did the autopsy confirmed the hanging was post-mortem; the cause seems to have been blunt-force trauma.
Battler - "I was in the guest house the entire time of the conference with Shannon, Kanon, Jessica, Maria, and George. When my cousins went to sleep, Shannon and Kanon moved rooms with me so we could catch up without disturbing them."
Shannon - "I was with Kanon and the cousins in the guest house the entire time. Kanon, Battler, and I moved rooms to not disturb the sleeping cousins. Battler and I continued to talk after Kanon went to the bathroom."
Kanon - "I was with Shannon and the cousins the entire afternoon in the guest house. I went to the mansion's bathroom as the one in the guest house has been functioning weirdly for the past few weeks. I returned to find the family and other servants looking for the missing three."
Jessica - "I talked with the others for hours, but I'd been up since early in the morning so I was kinda sleepy. I just took a seat on one of the beds in the room we were going to share and fell asleep not long afterward."
Maria - "Uuu~ Uuu~! I missed Battler so much! I showed him a few magic tricks before I went to sleep real late!"
George - "After Maria went to sleep, I tucked her in and went to lay down myself. Shannon, Kanon, and Battler left the room and the next thing I know, mother's waking me up saying that Battler's parents and Maria's mother were missing."
Natsuhi - "We searched for the gold for so long...If only we could find it, our financial troubles would be over with. We split up with our spouses, except Rosa who went with Rudolf and Kyrie, and we searched everywhere we could think of. We've failed to find the gold, and now we've got a killer on the island!"
Krauss - "Damn father and his riddle, I thought for sure we would find the gold in the grounds somewhere. Rosa's group was meant to be checking the chapel since they thought that father's riddle pointed to it as the starting point. I don't know what happened, but I've lost two siblings now...."
Eva - "Hideyoshi and I checked the chapel first, but there was no circle there. I returned the key to the case when we regrouped at the mansion. We waited a good bit for the other group, but we didn't know that they were dead....I woke George and Maria when we got to their room in the guest house."
Hideyoshi - "While we were in the parlor, the agreed-upon regrouping point, we heard someone come into the mansion through the back door in the kitchen. We assumed it was the missing group until nobody came into the parlor besides the servants who were on duty in the mansion."
Genji - "Kanon returned to the mansion on his own, stating he needed to use the restroom. I helped Kumasawa and Gohda serve drinks to the family when they returned. I heard the back door open while we were in the main hall and close a little later. I had assumed at the time that Kanon must have been disposing of the food we took to the study to keep up appearances.."
Kumasawa - "While the family was gone, Gohda and I were cleaning. He the kitchen, I the dining room. Genji had gone up to Kinzo's study with the doctor in order to retrieve the food they had taken up as a show to the rest of the family. Nanjo didn't return with Genji."
Gohda - "I prepared tea for the family when they returned while Genji and Kumasawa helped me serve it. Normally Shannon and Kanon would've done it, but they were assigned to the children tonight. Nanjo came back down from the study just as the family was preparing to leave with us to search for Rosa, Kyrie, and Rudolf."
Nanjo - "Genji and I were together until we went to the study. I decided to stay a little longer. It's still hard to believe that my old friend Kinzo is gone....After I had my fill, I returned downstairs and joined the family in their search for the missing party."
The family was likely horrified at their find, as the bodies were cut down and laid to rest under some sheets retrieved from the mansion. The chapel was locked back up as the siblings tried to calm the now-orphaned cousins, Maria and Battler, while holding back tears of their own. The group went back inside the mansion and decided to arm themselves with guns from the study. Hideyoshi, Eva, Krauss, and Natsuhi armed themselves when they noticed a letter on the desk, sealed with their father's ring's seal. They opened it and inside was a copy of the riddle that was in the mansion's entrance hall as well as a taunt from the killer. Note: No copy of the taunt was found and the original letter was lost in the explosion. It was at this point that the family realized that the servants were not in the room with them. After searching the study, they concluded that the missing servants must have not come in, for one reason or another. The family doctor was also missing. The family left the study to look for the missing servants and doctor and found the five servants' and the doctor's bodies in the entrance hall. Note: The diary page we found detailing the discovery mentioned contusions on the head of each body, however the bodies were lost in the explosion.
Battler - "Shit, we should've kept a better eye on them....If we had been paying more attention when Genji opened the study for us, they wouldn't have died! I was holding Maria's hand when we returned to the mansion. I never let go of her until we got to the study."
Jessica - "K-Kanon...Why? Why did you have to die?! You said we would always be together! Why did you let go of my hand when we got to the study? Why did you not follow us in!?"
Maria - "U-Uuu....Battler squeezed my hand too hard. When we got to grandpa's study, he hugged me because I was crying over mommy. I saw the servants and doctor Nanjo stay outside the study but I didn't say anything. I figured that Beatrice wouldn't hurt them since they were always so loyal to her...."
George - "Sayo....Why did you have to die the day I had planned to propose?! We were going to leave together and elope once the conference ended, I was sure! I swear when I find your killer, I'll make them suffer! You should've come in the study with me, maybe then...."
Natsuhi - "That stupid furniture! There's a killer on the loose and they stay outside?! Did they seriously suspect one of us? The nerve of them! Or or maybe they were planning on finding the gold themselves! They were plotting against us, weren't they?! I don't know which one of you killed those traitorous furniture, but they got what they deserved for trying to take father's gold for themselves!"
Krauss - "I thought something was odd when Genji didn't enter first as he always does. I didn't think at the time, and now they're all dead. They weren't even servants anymore, except Gohda who I had hired personally. I don't know what I'll tell Genji's, Kumasawa's, or Gohda's families....Shannon and Kanon were orphans, so there's no family to tell, but they still deserve something for their faithful service....If only they hadn't been murdered, I was going to release them all from this false servitude after this conference ended...."
Eva - "Hideyoshi and I stuck together the entire time after what we found in that damned chapel. We took up the rear of the group when we returned to the mansion, but around the time we got upstairs the servants started falling back. Shannon was the first to lag behind us, but I didn't think it was anything important."
Hideyoshi - "I also noticed Shannon fall behind. I noticed her talking to Kanon as Genji opened the study door for us and let us in. I had assumed they followed us in. Eva and I took a look at some of the books that Kinzo kept in his study when Battler pointed out that the servants weren't there with us."
October 6th, 1986.
After finding the servants, we decided to move them into another room for the police. I know that we shouldn't have moved the bodies, but we couldn't just leave them laying around in the entrance hall like that. We moved as a group while we moved the bodies into their bedroom. Afterwards, Hideyoshi needed to smoke so he went to the back door to smoke outside since Eva always hated the smell of cigarette smoke. The rest of us went to the parlor. Eva got worried after the grandfather clock struck midnight and Hideyoshi hadn't returned. She was always warning him not to smoke so much because it was bad for his health. She went to retrieve him despite her hatred of smoke and was gone for a while. We got worried. A few of us had left to use the bathroom or to get some tea, and I was just washing up in the bathroom in one of the bedrooms when Krauss knocked and told me that Eva and Hideyoshi had been gone for too long. We left together and rejoined with Natsuhi, Jessica, Maria, and George as we went to the back door and found Eva with a knife in her back. Hideyoshi was nowhere to be found, nor was Eva's gun. We moved her inside the kitchen and checked for life, but she was already dead. Note: Eva Ushiromiya's body was also lost in the explosion and Hideyoshi Ushiromiya's body was never recovered.
Battler - "I had to use the bathroom real bad, so after Jessica returned from taking Maria I went myself. Krauss and Natsuhi had ordered that only one person leave for the bathroom at a time until Hideyoshi and Eva returned. Jessica and Maria were the exception since Maria was too scared to go alone."
Jessica - "I took Maria to the bathroom after Aunt Eva left to find Uncle Hideyoshi. I don't know how long they were gone before she needed to go, but I took her to a bathroom in one of the guest bedrooms. I closed the door behind us just in case."
Maria - "Uuu...I'm scared....I needed to go and Jessica was nice enough to take me. I heard a door open and close while I was in the bathroom, but I had assumed that had been Aunt Eva returning with her husband."
George - "I never left the parlor after mom left to find dad. I had gone earlier to get a drink from the kitchen and heard dad talking to himself outside. He was scared and crying."
Natsuhi - "I told Krauss my suspicions regarding the furniture and he practically yelled at me for even thinking that they would betray us like that. He doesn't believe me, he never believes me! It's his fault we're in debt now, all I was trying to do was help! The yelling gave me a headache and I was rubbing at my head when Krauss said he was going to get Battler and that I should go with George, Maria, and Jessica to find Eva and Hideyoshi. He said he would be right behind us."
Krauss - "Natsuhi and I had another fight. We had been having those a lot lately....When we turned our attention away from each other Maria and Jessica were back and Battler was gone. Jessica said he had gone to use the bathroom himself. We waited a little bit longer and I decided that Eva and Hideyoshi had been gone long enough. As the rightful head of this family, it's my duty to protect the family, so I told Natsuhi to get the three children and head that way while I went to get Battler."
Note: Much of this page was obscured with blood and brain matter. We have restored it to the best of our ability.
We panicked. ----- was dead, ---- was missing, and their guns were gone. We decided to run somewhere safe, but we don't know where to go. ----- went missing at some point after we found mother's body; we weren't paying attention and we didn't notice that she had wandered off. There was what we thought was thunder at the time. It didn't take us long to figure out that what we had heard was a gunshot. Battler and I were the first to realize this and we ran to where we thought it came from. ----- and ----- came probably a minute later. That's when we found her. ----- was dead with a gunshot wound in her head. Another shot rang out and Battler was hit in the shoulder. We ran and ------ fell behind; we heard another shot and assumed the worst. ------ and I barricaded the door while ------ started to panic. I began writing this just in case. I just hope that we barricade the back door in t- Note: The page ends here. The author must've been shot while writing.
Battler - "I was in the chapel the entire time alone after we found Maria's body. I needed to dress my wound as well as I could, which was basic at best since I'm not a doctor. I found the bodies of George, Jessica, Maria, Natsuhi, and Krauss in the mansion's parlor with stakes in them. I ran and managed to find the damn gold at long last. I guess you know what happened next since, well, here I am."
Note: We found this page in the chapel. One of the windows had broken from a fallen tree, according to the forensic investigation.
Crap....I got hit. I didn't get a good look at them because they were hiding in the bushes, but I managed to get in here. The bastard shot at me again, but the storm must've obscured me because they missed. I found one of the missing guns on my way over here and I took it just in case. I need to get to the others.
I heard more gunshots while I was doing something about this bullet wound in my shoulder. I'm writing this just in case I don't come back. I need to get to the mansion and save the rest of my family!
Note: This section is speculation based on the evidence found in the diaries and on the physical evidence found.
A wounded Battler made his way to the mansion, with a gun in hand to defend himself if needed. There, he found his remaining family dead and staked. Note: These bodies were also lost in the explosion, however the stakes were found. He panicked and ran, knowing the killer was likely following him with intent to finish him off. At an unknown point, something in the mansion blew up, causing the entire mansion to burn to the ground; the leading theory is that the boiler is the source of the explosion. Battler Ushiromiya is presumed dead, as his body was never found.
***Update: A diary page detailing this was found in a bottle by a fisherman a month after the incident. Below is that page in its entirety.
Heh, who would've thought that the damn gold was real? A hidden vault beneath the mansion...that old bastard hid it right under our noses. A lot of good this will do me now. The entire family's dead and my wound has gotten reopened from my running away. I don't know how much longer I've got, but I found what looked like a hidden port further down the hallway that the gold room branched off of. Hopefully someone will find this page and know that the person that did this could still be out there. Note: Despite what the page said, we were unable to find any hidden vaults. The entrance was either hidden too well or he was wrong about its location.
